Blantyre Vics Vs Celtic

Blantyre Victoria Vs Glasgow Celtic - Benefit Match

26th August 1990 Blantyre welcomed the biggest club that had ever visited Castle Park as Billy McNeill took his Celtic side to the club where it had all started for him. Thousands attended this exhibition match which was organised to raise funds for the new pavilion being built at Castle Park.

The Celtic outfit, captained by Steve Fulton and included the likes of Gerry Creaney, Anton Rogue and Peter Grant were certainly a going to be a tricky task for Tommy Coggill's men.

The Hoops went two goals up inside the first twenty minutes, with goals from Dugald McCarrison and Alex Mathie. Although the Vics got a goal back in the 35th minute after a spectacular solo run from Michael Inglis.

Following the interval Mathie and McCarrison both got their braces as the Glasgow giants made it 1 - 4. Steve Murray scored a wonder free-kick for Blantyre shortly afterwards to get a goal back.

The young Celtic side finished off their day at Castle Park with two quickfire goals from former Manchester City man Gerry Creaney to extend their league to 2 - 6.

Three years afterwards a Celtic reserve side returned to Castle Park in another exhibition match. This time to officially open the new pavilion.
